Würzburg basketball players have had a wild season. At first things were bad and that is why coach Denis Wucherer had to leave. Almost at the same time, news came out that the title sponsor was leaving. In the end, however, the team caught up and ended up in the middle of the table.
Expectations of the season: urgent to avoid the risk of relegation
The new season begins next week with the home opener against Bournemouth (October 1 at 8:30 p.m.). It certainly won’t be easier than last year. Because there is no named sponsor, “you have to see what is possible with the budget,” said captain Felix Hoffmann. However, the goal for the season is definitely “top half of the table”. The Würzburgers do not want to face the specter of being fired.
A great prospect for Collin Welp to make his professional debut
One player in particular is raising high hopes: Collin Welp has signed a two-year contract in Würzburg. His role model is his father: in 1993, Christian Welp led the DBB team to win the European Championships in Munich. A man who died at the age of 51 gave a message to his son: He should play basketball with fun, but still have confidence in himself.
The latter is especially needed now. Collin Welp started his first season as a professional basketball player in Würzburg. That is why it will be decisive “how he can play in the Bundesliga, because it is his first year,” Hoffmann said to Würzburg.
However, he is very confident in the new signing: “He has trained well, has a strong throw, can read the game well”. Welp should hit for Würzburg from distance, but also clean under his own basket. Captain confirmed his potential for this. He “is at the right address with Saso Filipovski to exploit it as soon as possible”.
Coach Filipovski: A title collector
The new coach brings with him the good idea of victory. In his home country of Slovenia, he won dozens of championships and cups as an assistant and head coach at Union Olimpija Ljubljana from 1998 to 2006. In Poland, Filipovski won two championships and one cup. In Turkey, he led Banvit Bandirma to the finals of the Champions League. Before that, his club defeated the BBL club in Ludwigsburg in the semi-finals.
Stability – and then maybe the title?
Filipovski proved he can do basketball in the Bundesliga last season when he avoided the threat of relegation. Now he can prove that there are many pictures of him. It’s not about the topic yet. But maybe those in Lower Franconia will become a problem in the long run.
