A new record for an athlete collector: Michael Jordan’s basketball jersey was auctioned for ten million dollars. Details.
A jersey worn by basketball player Michael Jordan was auctioned in New York for $10.1 million (about ten million euros). Sotheby’s auction house said the jersey set a new record for an athlete’s collectible at auction on Thursday.
Jordan wore his team’s red #23 Chicago Bulls jersey in the first game of the 1998 NBA Finals, where he won his sixth and final championship. Sotheby’s auctioned a pair of Jordan basketball shoes last year for nearly $1.5 million.
The Jordan shirt broke the price set by the shirt worn by Argentine soccer star Diego Maradona last year. The shirt in which Maradona scored his “Hand of God” goal in 1986 was sold at auction for $8.6 million.
